WHAT?

Microsoft Minecraft

Coding in Minecraft, from creating one line of code to reverse engineering pre-written code, inspires students to engage in Computer Science. In this course, you will learn to apply Microsoft MakeCode in Block Code and JavaScript format directly in Minecraft: Education Edition. Throughout the course, you will be guided through both Minecraft and the Code Builder applications to explore how code can be used to create basic to complex learning opportunities and have an immediate impact on learning and teaching both in and beyond the Computing Studies classroom. Be sure to visit education.minecraft.com/download to download the free software and bring a mouse along to make the experience the best possible. Also download the free curriculum at Minecraft EDU for computer science or for general topics.

Microsoft Micro:bit

This is an introduction to coding and computer science by way of making and design, using the revolutionary new micro:bit microcontroller board, and Microsoft's easy and powerful MakeCode block-based coding environment. It is a project-based curriculum with a maker philosophy at its core; the idea is that by making physical objects, students create a context for learning the coding and computer science concepts. Your school will need to purchase a class set of micro:bits (about $225) in order to offer this to a class of 30 students. Download the free curriculum to get started and see what creative projects are available.
